In recent years Shelby County (Memphis, TN) has received negative attention for having one of the highest infant mortality rates in the nation. In addition , African American babies are two times less likely to make it to their first birthday than White babies. We have created a 5k entitled iM AWARE!, an acronym for Infant Mortality Awareness, which is designed to not only increase public knowledge about this important issue but also show our united effort as a county to make sure our babies have a healthy start to a bright future. As we walk, each step we take is a step we take together and one step closer to putting an end to infant mortality.
